This chapter sets out the context for discussion of community-based research in this book. It explains concept and provides a rationale as to why time is ripe universities worldwide engage research. argues that recent developments threats humanity planet require concerted approach human development, enable people identify embrace sustainable, positive responses changing demands life. calls paradigms methodologies create safe, inclusive spaces engaged partnerships between university community around issues rooted inequality. These include exclusion, marginalization, othering, denial dignity, privilege, impoverishment, racism, sexism other ‘isms’ by which some oppress negate many.
